For a man who grew up to become the “Bull Moose”, Theodore Roosevelt was a sickly child, suffering from asthma and other maladies. But his physical weakness actually drove him to be more active, which also fostered an interest in nature. It also helped that Teddy’s family was wealthy, allowing him privileges including home school and the ability to attend Harvard, where he was an athlete and took an interest in naval affairs. After finishing at Harvard, Teddy entered politics, but it didn’t stop him from writing The Naval War of 1812 in 1882, establishing himself as a professional writer and historian. In the 1890s, it was Teddy’s turn to make history, leading the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War and being decorated for his service with a Medal of Honor. He parlayed his glory into the governorship of New York and then the Vice Presidency under William McKinley. When McKinley was assassinated in 1901, young Teddy was thrust into the presidency, one that would earn him a place on Mount Rushmore, Roosevelt’s “Square Deal” domestic policies favored average citizens while busting trusts and monopolies. Roosevelt also promoted conservation as an environmental stance, while his “speak softly and carry a big stick” foreign policy is still an oft used phrase today. Roosevelt even earned a Nobel Prize during his presidency. By the time Roosevelt died in 1919, he was an American icon. Today, Teddy is remembered for being an explorer, hunter, author, soldier, president, and safari adventurer, all of which combine into one unique reputation.

If you look for Thomas Hart Benton in your local library, you will probably find only books about the artist. This is a really excellent biography of Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri - one of the giants of American politics in the pre-Civil War era.Benton was a southern slaveholder who believed - and said - that slavery was an evil that would eventually collapse. He insisted that slavery should not be extended beyond its 1820 limits. (Henry Clay also believed this, but was reluctant to say so.) Eventually, he was driven from the Democratic Party for his beliefs, but considered himself a Democrat for the rest of his life.
Anyone with an interest in the period must read this book!
Many of the low-price Kindle books are pretty shoddy products. This book is beautifully put together and is free from typos and mangled special characters. But wait - there's more! it has an active table of contents and an active index!!!!!!

just what my husband wanted
Knew the man-very accurate
After reading "Americas Great Debate" by Fergus Bordewich, I wanted to learn more about one of its central figures, Thomas Hart Benson. This Senator from Missouri, A Democrat representing the old south but also the new South(west). An orator, historian, indian fighter and man of Principle. A Unionist battling a mostly Southern Nullifiers. The author, Theodore Roosevelt, was a most suited writer. Both author and subject come from an era of tough swashbuckling leaders determined to make "Manifest Destiny" happen. This is a tale of the settling of Our country at its best and most courageous. My favorite was the story of a wild, massive bar fight among whose participants included Thomas Hart Benton and Andrew Jackson. They were evidently on opposite sides of the brawl. Andrew Jackson got shot and had to be carried out. He survived and became President. It's not certain who fired the shot. Jackson and Benton became friends and political allies. If one believes that todays politics is partisan and disappointingly unproductive then this tale will be an eye opener as well as fun reading

Thomas Hart Benton was a Senator's senator. A man of knowledge, negotiating skill, and strong character. Actively governing at all times, he worked diligently to expand our nation and stabilize banking. He was a man of courage who was much admired by T. Roosevelt. An interesting portrayal of this man's life.
I really enjoyed this book, not so much because of what it says about Benton but because here you have Teddy Roosevelt writing as a young man, before he became a politician. He makes no attempt at objectivity, his biases and prejudices are all out there for everyone to see. He seems to delight in laying into people he doesn't like and praising those he likes.
I got this book because I wanted to know more about Thomas Hart Benton, but I think I learned more about Roosevelt than Benton. That made it really worthwhile for me. I highly recommend this to any fan of Teddy Roosevelt. He was a man of strong convictions even in his 20's. And he is a very good writer.
Theodore Roosevelt's biography of Senator Thomas Hart Benton is one I've been meaning to read for a long time now, as both names came to prominence a few years ago during the Bundy land despute, but couldn't because the print on my phone was too small.
Fortunatly, I was able to obtain a copy of the book via Paperweight, which allowed me to read the text comfortably.
I found the book to be surprisingly good. It isn't a straight biography, more like a running commentary on the influence of frontier politics in America from about the Era of Good Feelings to the Dread Scott Era. A lot of Roosevelt himself is woven bluntly throughout the text, and althought he makes it clear he doesn't agree with everything Benton undertook, he admires his courage, conviction, and raw indepenence. You also learn why one of our counties has been named after him in Eastern Washington, which I have an appreciation of having finished the book.
It's one that is required if you want to understand the make-up of the West, and why these issues still dominate our political discourse today.
